Enchiladas

Image
A steaming hot plate arrives, heavy with a generous serving of red enchiladas, their soft corn tortillas soaked in a rich, earthy red Chile sauce. The enchiladas are stuffed—maybe with tender shredded chicken, cheese, or slow-cooked beef—and then smothered in more sauce and a thick layer of melted cheese, still bubbling slightly from the oven. The top is sprinkled with chopped onions, fresh cilantro, and a drizzle of crema, or commonly known as sour cream, for contrast. Next to the enchiladas sits a fluffy mound of Mexican rice, perfectly seasoned with tomato, garlic, and onion, each grain separate but tender. It's bright orange and speckled with bits of peas or diced carrots for color and sweetness. Beside the rice is a scoop of refried beans, creamy and savory, topped with crumbled queso fresco or a sprinkle of shredded Chihuahua cheese that’s starting to melt into the warm surface. A few crispy tortilla chips might be tucked in the side for dipping. To the side, a tall, frosty ...

  1)  What is one local effect or impact of plastic bag waste you observed in the video tha t you didn’t know about, hadn’t thought about before, or just found particularly interesting? One effect of plastic bag waste I observed from the video was that how plastic bags have transformed global landscapes into 'plastic deserts', where these bags can take from four hundred years to over a thousand years to break down, and even then, will often end up polluting the area they are breaking down into. 2)  Choose one specific way--one that you found compelling or promising--in which people in the video were attempting to manage or solve this local effect or impact and describe it briefly. Global efforts are moving to go against plastic bags, like in India where the Anti-plastic bag police squad rigorously enforce bans on thin single use bags. Along with legislation worldwide are successfully reducing plastic bag use. 3)  How do you think we should deal wi...

Reflecting on the environmental geography of your meal or product

Image
Is your meal or product a problem? If you determined that the negative environmental impacts of your meal or product were significant and considerable, what kinds of solutions do you think might best reduce these impacts? Consider the following: (a) What, if any, actions need to be taken at the global or national scale to reduce the environmental impacts associated with your meal or product? What are possible limitations to these “large-scale” solutions?                              1. The actions needed to be taken to reduce the environmental impacts of this meal [tostadas] would need to be fertilizer use and over farming of soil. The possible limitations of this is that certain countries would be unable to stop farming in certain areas due to lack of access to other plots of land to continue farming.  (b) What, if any, actions need to be taken at local scales (this might mean a state, a city, a v...

The environmental impacts of your meal

 1) What environmental impacts were associated with the production of your meal or item? - Tostadas are usually connected with environmental impacts such as corn fields, large factory manufactures, and pollution from farms.  (a) Determine and describe, in as much detail as you can, where at least two ingredients of your meal OR components of your consumer item were produced.  - Tostadas are made of many ingredients however the main two that are always needed are the tostada or shell which are made of large corn fields being harvested and then shipped to a large factory manufacturer to then be processed into the actual tostada shell.      - Tostadas are usually made in Mexico and then shipped all around the world to be sold at large levels. -  the Next step would be beans that come from a large field then yet again shipped to a large factory manufacturer to be processed and taken to stores to be sold.      - Beans are usually grown in Tex...

Tostadas, how many calories is it?

Image
Tostadas are a traditional Mexican dish, with a tostada shell as a base, a layer of refried beans, and a layer of Chihuahua cheese, then the other toppings can vary. For this example, I will just use chicken, tomatoes, onions, and seasonings.  However, let us look deeper into how many calories a delicious meal like this can be, shall we?  - Firstly the shell, the tostada base itself. According to the el Milagro labeling on the package, we can see that it has a rough Caloric intake of about 160 Calories by itself. Moving to our next step we will look at the refried beans, these refried beans from Goya tend to be made from a can in a pan of hot oil. Without the oil the Goya beans are sitting at a comfortable 110 Calories, however, when adding the oil it can bring this uptake to 100-300 more calories. On top of the seasoning, we put.  Our next step comes to some Chihuahua cheese as shown on the  Website attached  the Caloric intake can vary depending on how m...

Plastic Bags, Friend or Foe of the future?

Image
1) What is one local effect or impact of plastic bag waste you observed in the video that you didn’t know about, hadn’t thought about before, or just found particularly interesting? One fact that I really didn't realize about the impact of plastic bag waste was how plastic bags were made, see I personally never realized nor had a thought on what plastic bags were made out of, and when I found out they were made from oil it shocked me.  2) Choose one specific way--one that you found compelling or promising--in which people in the video were attempting to manage or solve this local effect or impact, and describe it briefly.  I felt hope when watching the film "Battle of the Bag" when I watched the part with Tony Amos doing something to help the ocean life that was being severely damaged by the overwhelming amount of plastic in the ocean. As I know there is a lot of plastic in the ocean and that a large variety of it does end up hurting animals however seeing what damage it ...
